Ken was born in Evanston, Illinois on May 29, 1935, to James Herbert Bateman and Audrey Mae Bateman. He was raised in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Ken received a BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Virginia on an ROTC Scholarship, and served in the United States Navy for several years as a Lieutenant Junior Grade.
Following his honorable discharge, Ken began his career; first with Allis-Chalmers and then with Ingersoll-Rand, where he would continue for the remainder of his career. At the time of his retirement in 2000, he was Executive Vice President in Charge of Government Sales in Washington, DC. On June 26, 1965, he married the love of his life, Jane Carol Ritzenthaler, with whom he would remain married until her passing in 2009. Together they had two sons, Andrew James and Mark Kenneth. He raised his family in Verona, New Jersey.
Ken is survived by his sister, Carolyn Bateman Allgaier of Peoria, Illinois, sons Andrew of San Jose, California and Mark of Warren, Vermont, daughter-in-law Duhong Bateman of San Jose, California, son-in-law Kyle Neyer of Warren, Vermont, and his grandchildren from Andrew and Duhong, Mathew James and Elizabeth Jane.
To say that Ken was an avid golfer is an understatement. As a member of the Montclair Golf Club in Montclair, New Jersey and later the River Bend Country Club in Great Falls, Virginia, he spent hours on the golf course, both conducting business and finding calm in the natural beauty. His crowning glory was a Hole in One at River Bend.
Funeral services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the University of Virginia, School of Engineering and Applied Science at https://giving.virginia.edu/ways-to-give.
