Madelyn was the only child of Tony and Emma Duarte and spent her younger years living on her family's apricot ranch, on Mount Hamilton. She enjoyed time with cousins, and assisted with the chores and seasonal work that came with an orchard of apricot trees.
She met Alfred "Al" Benzo while working at the San Jose Social Security office. They married in 1947. Madelyn and Al had two beautiful daughters, Judy and Diane.
Madelyn was a wonderful mother and homemaker, an accomplished artist, an avid reader and a great party host. But over the years, the most common description of her centered around her kindness and generosity. It brought her such joy to help others: family, friends and strangers.
She is survived by her daughter Diane (Peggy), grandchildren: Dianna (Adam), Amy, Robert, Nicholas, Danielle (Aaron) and great-grandchildren: Chance, Logan, Tyler and Emma.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Judy (2006) and husband Alfred (2013).
Madelyn will be tremendously missed. She strove to ensure that all knew they were welcome at her table. Her loving spirit will be felt during every holiday and family gathering.
A funeral mass for Madelyn will be held from at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 15, 2021 at St. Christopher Church, 2278 Booksin Avenue, San Jose, CA 95125.
