from us quietly and peacefully on June 27, 2018 to be with her Lord, with her daughter
Evelyn and her grandson Michael by her side.
She was affectionately known to many as Graciela or Gracie. Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico
to her parents Domingo Cordero and Engracia Gonzalez in 1927, she was the fourth child
of fourteen and the eldest daughter. In 1951, she moved to New York, landing a job in the
clothing industry as a seamstress and in 1952 moved to Oakland, California at the
invitation of a brother. Shortly after she moved to San Jose and began working at Levi
Strauss. In 1953 she married Ramon Hernandez and together they had three daughters:
Smyrna, Evelyn and Magdalena (Maggie).
Graciela was the happiest when she was surrounded by her family and friends. She
enjoyed cooking, sewing, knitting, gardening and loved children —- whether she had a
Sunday School class full of young children, a house full of kids to babysit or spending
time with her grandchildren, each child received her special attention and love.
She will be remembered for her generous spirit, her beautiful smile, her love and faith in
Christ.
We are heartbroken, but know someday we will reunite with her in heaven.
She is survived by her three daughters: Smyrna (Sammy), Evelyn (Clarence), Maggie
(Eric), her grandchildren: Joshua, Erika (Jovan), Michael, Christopher, Nicholas and one
great-grandchild, Hayden; her siblings Maria Mercedes Cordero(Serbia), German
Cordero, Luz Maria Cordero (Hernandez), Victor Cordero, Domingo Cordero and Gloria
Maria Cordero (Santos) and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends as well her
beloved honorary daughter, Jamie Leigh Carroll.
In lieu of flowers, may we suggest
