June 30, 1957 – February 10, 2025
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Michael Joseph Mendizábal. He peacefully passed away in his sleep on February 10, 2025, at the age of 67. Born on June 30, 1957, Albert and Bette Mendizabál raised Michael in San Jose, CA. He spent much of his early childhood “tending” to the vineyards with his Grandpa Seferino “Basco,” and being cared for by his Grandma Mari, who always had a Hershey’s bar for him. Michael, later, spent most of his adult life raising his family in Milpitas, CA.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy; his children, Nicole and Emo, Christopher and Michelle, Jacqueline and Luis Cesar, and Mari and Lawrence; his grandchildren, Oliver, Ofelia, Harrison, and Leo; his mom Bette; and his siblings, Michelle (Mark), Marisa (Hector), Matthew (Rose), and Marcos (Natalya). His biological mother, Nancy Rhead; and his siblings; Alex (Bill), David, and Allen (Lea). Also his Uncle Bob, Goddaughter Anisa, many beloved cousins, and extended family members.
A dedicated public servant, Michael worked for the City of San Jose’s Public Works Department for 30 years. He began his career as a Chainman on a Survey Party, then moved on to become a Survey Party Chief before becoming a Construction Inspector, and ultimately retired as Principal Construction Inspector in 2009. In addition to his city work, Michael was committed to his community and served as a Board Trustee for the Milpitas Unified School District from 1998 to 2011, including four terms as Board President. He showed his unwavering devotion to Milpitas through volunteering for many events, including the Relay for Life, and being an active member of the Milpitas Kiwanis.
Michael's love for his family was paramount in his life. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Nancy, with whom he shared 40 years of marriage. Together, they enjoyed traveling, especially trips to the Monterey Bay Area and Lake Tahoe. They spent countless hours together making memories. He was the proud father of four children whom he supported with boundless love and dedication. Whether hosting impromptu barbecue happy hours for Nicole, camping in the rain with Chris, watching Jackie train massive water buffalo and large cats, cheering on Mari while she played soccer, or spending time with his grandchildren —Oliver, Ofelia, Harrison, and Leo— as their beloved “Pupa.” Michael’s family was always at the center of his world.
He had a passion for life, which included golfing with friends, wine tasting, barbecuing, enjoying cioppino on Christmas Eve, making jam, and pickling vegetables from his garden. When he wasn’t filling a room with his laughter, he enjoyed relaxing in the hammock by his shed. He cherished quiet moments on the porch, sipping a glass of wine or Irish whiskey, and watching his favorite teams—the San Francisco Giants and 49ers—play.
A man of integrity, service, and love, Michael's legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His family and friends are forever grateful for the moments shared and the love he gave so freely.
A private celebration of Michael’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to Crosby’s Cure FOXG1 Research Foundation or Hope for the Unhoused in Milpitas.
