Romana Salazar Mamaril was born on August 10,1929 in San Jose, Northern Samar, Philippines to
parents Gregorio Salazar and Serafia Obediente. She grew up and took her early schooling in her
hometown and province.
“Mona” as she was fondly called by her contemporaries went to San Jose Northern Samar Central School
where she graduated valedictorian and at Sacred Heart Academy, Catbalogan, Samar.
In the early 50’s, Romana attended college at the Philippine Women’s University (PWU)in Manila where
she took up a course in Education. She was reputed to be the first from her native town to enter PWU.
She eventually met and married her husband, Procopio Salomon Mamaril of Urbiztondo, Pangasinan,
Philippines who predeceased her in April 2019.
In December 1983,Romana,migrated to the United States at the same time with her husband Procopio
and daughter Teresa.They initially resided in San Francisco, California before settling in San Jose,
California.
Mrs. Mamaril had a stint as teacher at Rainbow Bridge Pre-school and Day Care Center in nearby
Milpitas, California. Prior to this, she briefly took up related seminars and sessions at Ohlone College.
Romana died peacefully last October 22,2022 after a brief illness at the San Jose Regional Medical
Center, #225 N. Jackson Avenue, San Jose, California United States. She was 93 years old. During her
last moments, at her bedside, were her children Conrado, Gudelia, Carlos, Teresa, Va, Cora and daughter
in-law Cristy (Carlos’s wife).
She is also survived by her wonderful and lovable grandchildren King Carlos and Rana, Mikki and Danny, Don Jan and Tiana, Voltaire, Mariz, Nicole and Marvine, Ashley and Tristhan and Valerie along with her four great- grandchildren, Levi, Kian, Christina and Malakai.
A viewing will occur on November 16, 2022, from 2:00-4:00 pm, followed by a celebration of life to honor
Romana from 4:30-6:00 pm at Oakhill Cemetery and Memorial Park Chapel (300 Curtner Avenue, San
Jose, CA). A reception will take place from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
The next day,on November 17, 2022, another service will be held at Oakhill Chapel (300 Curtner Avenue,
San Jose, CA) from 10:00-11:00 am. After, the funeral cortege carrying the coffin will proceed to Milpitas-
Fremont Cedar Lawn Cemetery (48800 Warm Springs Blvd, Fremont, CA) where her remains will be
finally laid to rest. The interment is fixed for 11:30 am.
