TRAN Vinh Thai, M.D., age 73, passed away on August 26, 2020, in San Jose, California. Dr. Tran was born in Saigon, Vietnam on July 22, 1947, one of 15 children to Y Lai Tran and Yen Thi Pham. Dr. Tran received his Medical Doctorate at the School of Medicine, University of Saigon, South Vietnam in 1978. Dr. Tran was the President of the alumni club of his high school, Vo Truong Toan, as well as a former treasurer of Premier Care Northern California and proud member of the Vietnamese Physician Association. Following the Vietnam War, he immigrated to America in 1980, along with several family members whom he helped to escape from the communist regime in Vietnam. After escaping pirates in the Gulf of Thailand, Dr. Tran arrived in the Songkhla Refugee Camp in Thailand, where he voluntarily put his medical skills to use, examining and treating his fellow refugees in the camp. He eventually settled in America, initially in Houston, Texas, before making his way to Southern California. On October 22, 1983, Dr. Tran married Yen Thi Le. During this period, he dedicated himself to becoming a physician in America, which required retaking numerous medical exams in order to practice medicine; he studied and passed these exams while simultaneously working as a licensed vocational nurse to provide for his family. Dr. Tran eventually completed his medical residency at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, in 1993. In August 1994, Dr. Tran opened his medical practice on East Santa Clara Street in downtown San Jose, California, where he specialized in internal medicine. Dr. Tran passionately devoted himself to his practice for 22 years, and ultimately retired in 2016. He was an avid wine connoisseur, loved the history of the French Revolution, and proudly embraced the values of freedom and democracy, which allowed him to pursue his passion for medicine across 2 countries. The only thing Dr. Tran loved more than his practice was his family. Dr. Tran is survived by his wife, Yen Thi Le; his daughter, Ann Bui; his son, Tony Tran; his grandsons, Landon Ky, Jaden Ky, and Ryan Tran; and his granddaughter, Kaylee Galindo.
