An accomplished strategist, marketer, sailor, Board director, and investor, David lived a full and vibrant life that spanned the Northeast and Puerto Rico. Born in Schenectady, NY, David grew up in Pittsburgh, PA and the New York City area until his family emigrated to Toronto, Canada in the mid-70s. David earned his BS in Economics from Trent University, and after returning stateside, he earned his MBA at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
David’s professional career included deep dives in finance, entrepreneurship, strategy consulting, and marketing. His longest tenure, and one of his professional peaks, was serving for almost two decades as a senior Vice President at the V. Suarez Company, where he led and managed many of the corporation’s major strategic initiatives and key supplier portfolios, including the astounding launch and rise to dominance of Coors. After leaving V. Suarez, David became an independent strategy consultant and investor, and served as a board director for a number of innovative start-ups, specializing in the food & beverage sector.
David’s interests and accomplishments were multifaceted. A natural sailor and navigator, he sailed his Cal 28 sloop single-handedly from New England to Puerto Rico, made several transatlantic crossings, raced, and explored virtually every island in the Caribbean; he also earned his 25/50 Ton Master Captain’s license. A classic car enthusiast, he exulted in a 1971 MGB/GT, a midnight purple 1967 Jaguar E-type coupe, and his revered 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera. He traveled throughout the world, and loved to share fine wine, delicious food, and a salty perspective.
David was most proud of his beautiful daughter Mia and son Giancarlo, whom he loved above all else. His marriage to Carmen Santiago Chardon ended in divorce. His survivors include his parents, Robert and Barbara Allio; brothers Mark and Michael; his nephews Luc, Declan, Christopher, Devon; his niece Nicole; and many beloved friends in Puerto Rico, and beyond.
