Frederick Douglas Pitts, Sr., 92, of Oakland, California - devoted husband, father and grandfather - departed this life on January 5, 2021. He was born on January 1, 1929, in Gray, Georgia. A veteran of the United States Army, he was awarded the Bronze Star for his service in the Korean War. Fred received a B.S. in mathematics from Morehouse College in Atlanta and an M.S. in mathematics from Atlanta University. A pioneering computer programmer, he moved to Dayton, Ohio, and began writing code for the U.S. Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in 1956. He rose to become civilian Head of Computer Center Operations for the Aeronautical Systems Division of the Air Force, before retiring in 1985. Following his retirement from the civil service, he worked as an executive in private industry. He was for more than fifty years a member of Zion Baptist Church, where he served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons for nearly a decade, stewarding both the acquisition of a new church building and the hiring of a new minister. Fred is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty Blackburn Pitts of Oakland; son, Dr. Frederick D. Pitts, Jr., and daughter-in-law, Kelly Rinehart Pitts, of San Francisco; son, Mark D. Pitts, daughter-in-law, Andreana Dereniak, and grandchildren, Adam and Catherine Pitts, of Oakland; and brothers Benny Gray of Gray, Georgia and Mack Gray of Atlanta.
