Betty Jean Bryant Baker was born in Salt Lake City to May and Thomas Bryant on September 30, 1928, the eldest of three children: sister, Joanne (Peter) Russell and brother, Stephen (Julie) Bryant (deceased in 1990). Her childhood years were spent in Salt Lake City nurtured by loving parents, siblings, grandparents, many aunts, uncles, cousins and the LDS church. In 1950 she graduated from the University of Utah with a BA in English and a Secondary School Teaching Credential. During her years at the University, she worked at Grand Canyon, Arizona and Sun Valley, Idaho. After graduation, she headed for California and only returned to Salt Lake City for numerous visits with family and friends. A high school teaching job was not to be because her employers thought she "looked too young to handle disciplinary problems." Although she was too tall to meet the height standards of TWA, the TWA doctor suggested she bend her knees a little, and passed her. This began a 10 year career as a TWA flight attendant, traveling all over the world, She made life-long friendships with those she lived and worked with. While based in San Francisco, she met her husband, Jon Baker, a former NFL football player for the New York Giants. They built their San Rafael home in 1968 and raised two children, Susie and Jon. They were her pride and joy! When her husband, Jon died in 1992, he left her the gift of a second career - real estate appraising which she pursued in her later years. Her interests were varied: tennis, skiing, spectator sports (football, basketball, baseball, softball, golf), sewing, knitting, home decor, bridge, gardening and love of the theater. Her father would brag that she was the best left-handed pitcher in the women's softball league - but - he neglected to add that she was also the ONLY left-handed pitcher in the league! She is survived by her children, Susie (Bill) Horton of San Diego, CA and Jon (Emily) Baker of Sydney, Australia, 5 grandchildren, Troy, Brandon, Evie and Allie Horton and Christian Baker and sister, Joanne (Peter) Russell of Ogden, Utah. Betty always believed that she was very blessed in her lifetime.
