Jan was born in Omak WA in 1933 and is the daugther of Herb and Laurette Price. She grew up in Omak with her 3 siblings Jack, Polly and Camille. Jan had six children with her husband Jim - Steve (Suzette), Brian (Julie), Jeff (Susan), Audrey (Bill Meyer), Paul (Julie) and Bruce (Mie). She also had 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren (soon to be 8), all of whom were beloved by Jan and provided her great joy over the years. Jan is predeceased by her husband Jim (married for 63 years), sister Polly and son-in-law Bill.
Jan attended Marylhurst College in Portland OR and University of Washington in Seattle WA and was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. Jan then attended Katherine Gibbs secretarial school in New York City in the early 1950s and met her future husband Jim Grant in San Francisco in 1956. They got married on September 8, 1956 in Omak. Jim and Jan raised their 6 children in San Rafael. They loved to take their kids camping in her younger years. She also loved playing tennis and watching professional tennis players. She was part of a tennis club in San Anselmo for many years, and she went to Wimbledon with her sisters in 2008. She was also a diehard 49ers fan back to when Joe Montana took the 49ers to their first Super Bowl in the 1981-82 season. After her kids were older, Jan went back to work and worked for many years for Southern Pacific Railroad. Eventually she became the secretary to the chairman and owner Phil Anschutz.
Jan's legacy includes many wonderful memories for her children and grandchildren. These include numerous summer trips to the state of Washington to visit her siblings, nieces and nephews in the 1970s. Many of these trips were in the Grant's classic 1965 Volkswagen bus with Jim and Jan and all 6 kids, all of their luggage and a dog piled into the car traveling with the gas pedal floored at an absolute max speed of 55mph the whole way (unless there was any sort of uphill grade). Jim and Jan and the 6 kids also spent vacations camping up and down the California and Oregon coasts; their love of the ocean resulted in their purchase of a home on the Mendocino coast.
They spent their later years enjoying the Mendocino coast home and hosted their kids and grandkids often over the years. They would frequently treat for Sunday brunch at Little River Inn. Many of her older kids, in particular Steve and Brian, are quite cheap (we mean frugal) so they especially enjoyed not having to reach into their wallet. Jan's kids and grandkids are eternally grateful for such fond memories.
Jan's children will be forever grateful to her caregiver Luisa who spent the last six years taking care of Jan.
Jan's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will gather in Mendocino this summer to remember and celebrate her life and to bury her ashes next to her husband Jim at the Little River Cemetery.
