Ann was an extraordinarily kind, caring, joyful, and holy neighbor, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, artist, and listener. Born in Chicopee, Massachusetts to teachers Mary Shea Austin and John Francis Austin, she followed in their teaching footsteps in Chicopee, and continued teaching through picnics, many ministries in parishes in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Connecticut, decades at the Miramar Retreat House in Duxbury, and a vigorous retirement, filled with family, community, and contemplative and devotional practices, showing up and praying for all of us.
Back on Cape Cod for the past three decades, long after she and Peter had first met and honeymooned there, Ann was active in the Corpus Christi parish (where she was a regular in the Holy Hour chapel), Sandwich Senior Center, painting, fiber crafts, vigorous card games, and long walks around the neighborhood and conservation trails.
She joins her nearest siblings Joe and Peg Austin, and is celebrated by her remaining siblings Rose Austin, Mary Whitmore, and Liz Gardella (and husband Ed), and sister-in-law Eva, her husband of fifty five years Peter, children Pete (and wife Erin) and Kirsten (and husband Colin), grandchildren Finn and Maggie, and many much loved nieces, nephews, and grand-niblings, whose birthdays and events Ann loved celebrating--with the perfect card and beautiful Palmer-method script, and also with such delightful baked goods, particularly cookies and pies.
To honor her memory, show up for those who need you (ideally with food and spiritual courage), and pray for people everywhere.
A visitation will be held at 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 9, 2026 at the NIckerson-Bourne Funeral Home 154 Route 6A Sandwich. A Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 10th at Corpus Christi Parish 324 Quaker Meetinghouse Road East Sandwich. Burial to follow at St. Peter's Cemetery.
