Barbara A. Dowd

Barbara was born on February 11, 1935 in Stamford, CT to Daniel Eugene Shaub and Harriet (Griswold) Shaub. She was married to Gerald (Jerry) Dowd for more than 50 years before his passing on March 29, 2013. Barbara and Jerry met while attending Saint Anselm College in Manchester, NH.

Barbara received her diploma in nursing from The Hospital of Saint Raphael School of Nursing in 1956. She later attended Saint Anselm and graduated in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Barbara practiced obstetrical nursing.

Barbara enjoyed gardening, loved to dance, and had a great laugh. An insatiable reader, her love of the written word lives on in her trademark gift - a tenderly inscribed book. She was elegant, intelligent, fiercely loyal, and compassionate. Barbara sought peace for those who struggled. She treasured her grandchildren with unfailing patience and a gentle smile to the end.

Barbara is survived by her five children: Mary Givens and her former husband Scott Givens of East Windsor, CT; Moira Noonan and her husband Stephen of Sandwich, MA; David Dowd and his wife Elizabeth Tsehai of Washington, DC; Margaret O’Regan and her husband Robert of Sandwich, MA; and Maureen Dowd and her husband Sean Warecke of Wellfleet, MA.

Barbara will be missed by her nine grandchildren: Siobhan, Scotty (Buddy), and Tristan Givens; Joshua, Kasey, and Matthew Noonan; Gabriel and Rafael Dowd; and Joseph O’Regan.

A remembrance service will be planned at a later date.
