Eleanor M. Morey of Sandwich, Massachusetts, wife of the late Walter J. Morey and daughter of the late Bryan M. McSweeny and Eileen C. (Murphy) McSweeny, passed away peacefully on February 7, 2026, after a brief illness. She was 88 years old.
Born and raised in Brockton, Eleanor attended St. Patrick’s Parochial School, where she served as President of the Class of 1955. She then began her career at People’s Savings Bank, where she was recognized for her dedication and excellence before marrying Walter and raising her family in Brockton.
Every year, Eleanor packed the car for the family’s annual summer stay on Cape Cod, spending treasured time with friends and loved ones, creating memories in Provincetown and later Truro. She was proud to have served as part of the Cape Cod National Seashore’s earliest class of Park employees. She and Walter eventually made the Cape their year-round home, moving to Sandwich in 1983, where Eleanor became an active and beloved member of the community.
Known to her family and friends as “Ellie,” she was cherished for her kind, patient, and affable nature. Deeply proud of her Irish heritage, Ellie loved to travel—especially to Ireland and throughout Europe. She found joy in cooking for others, particularly during the holidays, antiquing and tending her gardens. As Gramma, she built a special lifelong bond with her grandchildren, Allie and Jack, through shared traditions and adventures, creating a deep and everlasting love. In recent years, she delighted in meandering drives to the Lower Cape with her daughter, Ann, and son, John, revisiting treasured memories of Cape Cod together for “destination lunches.”
Ellie was the devoted mother of Ann M. Morey of Sandwich, and John P. Morey (Carla M. Morey) of Woods Hole. She was the loving and proud grandmother of Alexandra “Allie” M. Morey-Weihs (William Weihs) of Millis, Massachusetts, and John “Jack” P. Morey Jr. (Jefferson Barrett, MD, MPH) of New York City. She was also the adoring great-grandmother of her “little buddies,” Patrick W. Weihs and Riley A. Weihs.
She is also survived by her brother, Bryan J. McSweeny, DDS, of Marion, Massachusetts, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and a remembrance service will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 154 Route 6A Sandwich, on February 13th followed by a luncheon reception. Private burial will take place at the Massachusetts National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Eleanor’s name to The Friends of Cape Cod National Seashore, www.fccns.org.
