I never met a person that had such a positive outlook and genuine sense of humor.  He would do anything for his family or a friend.  I miss our conversations full of sarcastic comments.

Bob, I am going to miss you buddy.  Your effective humor, wit and candor is a rare character trait lost upon many. When you gave the unsuspecting recipient a second dose of “Bob” they quickly changed their tact. I’m honored to have known you.

I had read NotThePTA blog and was impressed by the engagement and the humor of it’s author Bob Simmons.  His devotion to the schools of Sandwich and the issue of adequate funding was music to my ears.  After the budget forecast came out for the town in the early 2000’s with the schools budget being cut, Bob called my house to talk to me and my husband and we pondered what to do.  Shortly after,  following a series of community meetings an Override Ballot Question Committee was formed with Bob as the chair.  I felt Bob deserved to be chair since it was his bravery and his blog that inspired activism.   He was a great chair!  During the next few months I got to know Bob and worked with him daily.  It was a blast, fascinating, and successful.  Bob was hardworking, straight talking, and enormously funny.  He was like the little brother I never had.  Loved the big guy.  Rest In Peace Bob!  You were one of a kind and I will always remember you!  Till we meet again.

This news is heartbreaking for anyone who had the pleasure of meeting Bob.  I worked with him for about 10 years.  He always had a positive attitude and infectious laugh.  Bob always spoke of his family with pride and affection.  

There are many memories with Bob but one that comes to mind occurred shortly after joining his team at a company that grows cranberries.  He decided to take me on a tour of the operations in his Dodge Ram pick up truck.  As we made our way through the bog’s, I noticed the roads were getting narrower.  When I pointed it out to Bob, he just stated “we were fine”.  As the road continued to narrow the deeper we traveled into the property, he just kept on going because in his mind “we were fine”.  As tree branches slammed against the side of his truck sounding like rocks, he still was convinced “we were fine”.  Well apparently, it turned out we made our way to a road that is only meant for small-motorized quads that were about half the size of his vehicle.  By the time he stopped and was willing to admit there was a problem, we were blocked from getting out of the truck from either side.  As he backed the truck up, I was convinced he would have dents and scratches covering the vehicle costing thousands of dollars to repair.  When we got out of the bog road the truck was a mess, but Bob was still convinced “it would be fine”.  The very next day after a trip to the car wash there was not a mark on his truck.  I realized then when you got involved with Bob in anything, he did his best make everything work out fine.   You will be missed.            


It is with great sadness that I express my condolences to the family of Bob Simmons. He gave his energy and love first and foremost to his family, but found time to give back in a very committed way to his community. His wit and perspective on life will be long remembered. To those who know the family well, we all agree this  perceptive and quick wit fit right in with the family gatherings. May you Rest In Peace, Bob.

Wow, I just stumbled upon this literally just now (today at 10:30am). I am like in such septic shock. That Big Bob, he was such a character. So many happy memories of the Simmons family over the years (e.g. get togethers at each other’s houses, late night beach bonfires and even going trick or treating, ironic he passed a few days before Halloween) 59 years old, wow that’s young, thought he would’ve been around much longer than that. I will add the Simmons family to the list of people I will pray for. May you all live long and prosper!
