Alice H. Young of Atlanta entered into rest on November 9, 2018. Born in Gordon County, Alice moved with her parents, 3 sisters, and brother to Monticello, GA when she was 3. When she was only 6, her mother died. Alice worked hard helping her father on their dairy farm. At 16, she graduated from high school, went to Middle Georgia College for 2 years, and then graduated from UGA at age 20. She married Jim Young in 1953 and was his faithful, committed wife until his death in 2013. As a young adult, Alice was a hospital dietician and then became an outstanding first grade teacher, but mostly, she was a full-time mom. Since 1968, she was a member of Peachtree Presbyterian Church. Her service there included 4 terms as an Elder, Chairman of the Wedding Guild, Stephen Minister, Sunday School teacher, and officer of the Gene Wilson Sunday School class. She helped establish the Nursery Guild, served on the Memorial Guild, was Coordinator of the Pictorial Directory, served as Assistant Clerk of the Session, and on the seasonal decorating committee. She was a dedicated student in numerous Bible studies and an active member of the Peachtree Squares. When named Peachtree's first "New Life Member," the church wrote, "All who know Alice appreciate her loyal, supportive, and Christ-like attitude towards others as well as her determination to live her own life in a moral, Christian manner." Alice also volunteered at Northside Hospital, performing its puppet shows at elementary schools in the Atlanta area, walked 5 miles in her neighborhood every day for over 30 years, and loved to sing. Alice's most treasured roles were being mother to her 3 children - Cindy Sellers (Wade), Curt Young (Carol), and Cathy Hall (Jack); and "Ama" to her 7 grandchildren. Her legacy of strong faith, unending love, commitment to family, generosity, thoughtfulness, self-sacrifice, self-discipline, delicious family meals, love of music and singing, along with her wise counsel and listening ear, have blessed her family immeasurably. She is profoundly missed, but we rejoice that she is Home. A memorial service and reception will be at Peachtree Presbyterian Church, 3434 Roswell Rd., 11/12/18, at noon. Alice's family thanks Aberdeen Place Hospice and Arbor Terrace of East Cobb for their compassionate care.
