Barbara Farish (nee: Glenn), born 22 August 1935, died peacefully 9 August 2024. Born in Opelika, AL, she lived for the past 55 years in Sandy Springs in north Atlanta and at Solana of East Cobb for the past 4.5 years where she had a wonderful team of helpers, many of whom were prayer partners.
A memorial service will be held 15 August at 1 pm in the Chapel at Johnson Ferry Baptist, 955 Johnson Ferry Rd in Marietta. Friends are invited to join the family in a reception afterward.
She was married for 57 years to Jay Farish, who died in 2013 and is survived by three children: Julie Mendenhall (Mel), Steve Farish (Robin), and John Farish (Celia). She was the extremely proud grandmother of Allen, Brett, Madison, Ansley, Taylor, Sarah Elizabeth, Christiana, Reagan, Stephanie, and John. She also had 13 great-grandchildren with a 14th on the way.
Barbara grew up in Opelika, AL where, among other things, she was the city’s Centennial Queen in 1954. She also waved at Franklin Roosevelt when he visited earlier, during WWII. She attended nearby Auburn University for 2 years and was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She and Jay married in 1955. Early in their marriage they lived in Alabama, Oklahoma, and back to Alabama before moving to Atlanta in the late 1960’s.
Before a later career as a pre-school teacher, Barbara volunteered as a Pink Lady at Northside Hospital and at the Special Needs Center in Dunwoody. She also volunteered at her kid’s schools and was the Missions’ head at her Church at the time--Mt. Vernon Presbyterian. She taught pre-school at Peachtree Road Methodist for 15 years. She and Jay volunteered as well at the Sandy Springs Mission.
The most important thing to Barbara, though, was her faith in her Lord Jesus Christ, and that faith was genuinely reflected in all aspects of her life; she sought to bring Glory to God. She was a member at Mt. Vernon Baptist for 20 years and more recently at Johnson Ferry Baptist for 22 years, where Jay and she were in the George Wright Class.
Officiating at the service will be Steve Farish, G. Bryant Wright, and Clay Smith with music from Bobby and Kelly Smith. In lieu of flowers, contributions should be made to Wears Valley Ranch at One Fine Place in Sevierville, TN 37862.
