Carol Anne Catanzaro

Carol Anne Catanzaro, 79, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2016. Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Carol was the daughter of Dr. Douglas A. Ries and Anne Soraghan Ries. She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Dr. Marshall John Catanzaro, her childhood sweetheart and the love of her life, whom she married in December of 1959.

Carol graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy and Fontbonne College, after which she taught second grade for two years. In 1970, Carol and Marshall moved their family to Atlanta when Marshall joined Northside Hospital. Carol, a gifted homemaker, devoted herself to raising their five children.

Carol was quick to embrace the warmth and friendliness of the South, while still cherishing her mid-western roots. Cute, petite and sweet, Carol was always ready with a compliment or a kind word to friends and strangers alike. She loved strong coffee, chocolate, and bacon (extra crispy), and she was never happier than when surrounded by her children and thirteen beloved grandchildren. Her Catholic faith was a continuing source of meaning and comfort.

Carol is survived by her five children: Cathy Catanzaro Clark (Bert) of Atlanta, Joe Catanzaro, M.D. (Tonya), of Greenville, SC, Anne Catanzaro Saunders (Pat) of Memphis, TN, Jenny Catanzaro of Atlanta, and Mary Pat Catanzaro Manfredi (Jack) of Athens, GA; and grandchildren Ben, Matthew and Julia Clark; Chandler, Mackenzie, Madeline and Sophie Catanzaro; Allie, Weldon and Lily Saunders; and Nicholas, Ryan and Caroline Manfredi; and sisters Susan Ries Meyer and Peggy Ries Herning, and brother, Douglas Ries, Jr., all of St. Louis.

Visitation will be held Friday, June 10 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at H.M. Patterson & Son-Arlington Chapel. A funeral Mass celebrating Carol’s life will be at Holy Spirit Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 11, with burial immediately following at Arlington Memorial Park.
