

Carolyn Smith Kyle, 88, died quietly at her home in Belmont Village on the morning of January 4, 2014 after a long illness. Carolyn was born November 10, 1925 to Dr. Green Hampton and Annie Merle Smith of Birmingham, AL. She grew up in Birmingham and was a proud graduate of the University of Alabama. She was married for 62 years to Claude Alvin Kyle, who preceded her in death. Carolyn leaves her beloved children, Phil Kyle (Susana) of Stockbridge, GA, Kathy Forehand (Geri) of Sandy Springs, GA, and Kenny Kyle (Lisa) of Germantown, TN and 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. She also leaves her brother, Dr. Green Hampton Smith, of Birmingham, AL and was preceded in death by her sister, Anne McEachern (Lee) of Corte Madera, CA. A resident of Atlanta for a span of 56 years, save for a stint of nine years in Germantown, TN, Carolyn was an accomplished seamstress and quilter. Many of her quilts won awards at a variety of quilt shows, including the annual American Quilters' Society Conference in Paducah, KY. She helped lead the effort to create special quilts for the participants in the 1996 Olympic Games held in Atlanta and one of her quilts was given to Billy Payne, chairman of the Atlanta Olympic Committee. She also served as treasurer and documentarian of the Georgia Quilt Project which documented the history of quilts and quilting in Georgia. Several of her quilts have hung proudly in the Georgia Governor's mansion and the Atlanta Historical Society. The needlepoint kneelers she helped fashion at St. George's Episcopal Church in Germantown remain in use to this day. The family wishes to thank all her many caregivers and friends at Belmont Village, as well as the nurses with Crossroads Hospice, for their loving care and support over these many months. Friends and family will gather from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, January 6th at H.M. Patterson and Son, Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Rd NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30328. A celebration of her life will be held Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at the Episcopal Church of the Atonement, 4945 High Point Rd NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30342 at 11:00 am with interment to follow at Arlington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Crossroads Hospice, 1957 Lakeside Parkway, Suite 500, Tucker, GA 30084.
