

Cleo Malires age 85 of Atlanta passed away peacefully on September 5, 2016. She was born on April 22, 1931 in Elm Creek, Nebraska. Cleo was raised on a farm in Nebraska and was one of nine children, the daughter of Mary and Theodore Spurgetis. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, William “Bill” Malires and infant daughter, Cassandra Malires. Survivors include her son, Peter James Malires (Monica), son Michael William Malires (Nancy); grandchildren, Michael James Malires (Christie), Ryan Dobrin (Sloan), Kylie Wangenheim (Erik); great grandsons, Carter and Cooper Malires and brothers, Nick and Jim Spurgetis. Cleo and Bill married in 1951 and in 1968 the family moved from Rock Island, Illinois to Atlanta and maintained the same residence in Buckhead for 48 years. Cleo was dedicated to her family and the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. Cleo was a team mother for NYO and actively involved with Chastain Park sports activities. During her 25 years she was a dedicated financial accountant for Newcomb & Boyd in Atlanta, an engineering and consulting firm. Cleo’s passion was cooking especially during the holidays where the family enjoyed authentic Greek food for Christmas, Easter and other occasions. Her dedication and commitment to her husband, sons, grandchildren, great grandsons and daughters-in-law was her life. Cleo was a truly selfless woman, not only to her family but to her faith. Cleo attended the Greek Church every Sunday. She was a woman of kindness, generosity, wisdom, compassion and was deeply loved and will be missed by her entire family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Greek Orthodox Cathedral of The Annunciation, 2500 Clairmont Rd., Atlanta, GA 30329. The family will receive friends and family for visitation from 5:00 o’clock on Sunday September 11, 2016 until 7:00 o’clock at H.M. Patterson and Son, Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Rd., NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30328. There will also be a prayer service at 6:00 o’clock. Funeral services will be Monday, September 12, 2016 at 11 o’clock at The Greek Orthodox Cathedral of The Annunciation. Interment will be at Rock Island Arsenal National Cemetery in Illinois at a later date.
