Donald Richard Jones, Jr.(D.R., Dick) 91, died peacefully at home August 22, 2018. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, he graduated from The McCallie School in Chattanooga, Duke University and Emory Law School. He served in the Navy Reserves, having participated in the Navy V12 program.
An avid outdoorsman and conservationist, he was the national president of the Izaak Walton League, as well as active in Safari Club International, Quail Unlimited and Trout Unlimited. He won numerous conservation awards for his stewardship of his hunting property, Hat Creek Plantation.
D. R. was active in the Atlanta Bar Association, Georgia Trial Lawyers Association, The Old War Horse Lawyers Club and a member of Cherokee Town and Country Club.
A serial entrepreneur, he helped found the first FM stereo radio station,WKLS, was a 1960’s investor in Bald Ridge Marina, co-founded WATL/TV 36, as well as being the founding Chairman of The Trust Co of Tennessee, all in addition to his successful private practice of law inAtlanta.
He was predeceased by his parents, Winifred McLaughlin Jones, Donald Richard Jones, Sr. and son, George Pitt Jones. He is survived by children, Sharon Jones Miller Pryse (Joe) of Knoxville, Donald Richard Jones III, Thomas Davis Jones (Celeste); grandchildren, Donald Richard Jones IV (Naida), Anna Celeste Jones, David Jones (Shannon) and the mother of his children, Martha Jane Jones, all of Atlanta. His surviving step grandchildren and step great grandchildren include Susan, Jay, Ian and Cameron Bush, Appleton, Wisconsin; Will, Kenzie, Trey (Megan), William IV, and Duncan Miller, Winston Salem, NC; Callie (Trinity) and Lydia Broyles, Knoxville.
Receiving of friends will be Thursday, August 23 at Cherokee Town Club from 5-7, with a graveside service at Arlington Memorial Park, Sandy Springs,GA, 10 am Friday, August 24, officiant Dr. Bill Burch, Northside United Methodists Church. The family would like to thank special caregivers Carrie Gilchrist and Virginia Tomlin.
