Mrs. Elena Bonau of Atlanta, Ga beloved wife, mother, and grandmother passed away peacefully May 15 at the age of 97.
Elena was born in Cuba and emigrated to the US in 1961 after the Cuban revolution to flee communism and ensure that their children would grow up in a free country. She and her husband had to restart their lives and careers. Elena went back to college to be able to teach in this country. She taught Spanish at the high school level. She was part of the initial faculty at the Atlanta International School becoming head of the Spanish department and teaching Jr/Sr year Spanish in the Baccalaureate program.
Elena was devout Catholic and always tried to help others in need. She was strong, courageous, and fiercely devoted to her family. She was loved and respected by all and she he will be dearly missed.
Elena was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Rogelio Bonau who passed away in 2012. She is survived by her daughter Maria Elena Bonau-Barker, son Dr. Roger (Debbie) Bonau, grandchildren Kelly (Matt) Jones, Lauren (Sam) Vaughn, Amy Bonau, Matthew Barker and Kathryn Barker. She was blessed to have met her great grandchild Roger Vaughn.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at Mary Queen of Angels and Alive Hospice in Nashville, Tenn.
A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday May 22nd at 10 am at St. Jude's Catholic Church in Sandy Springs, Ga. A reception will immediately follow.
