Gil Carter, age 84 of Sandy Springs, died June 27, 2018 at Kennestone Hospital. Funeral services will be Saturday, July 7, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. with the family receiving friends beginning at 12:30 p.m. at H.M. Patterson and Son, Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Rd., NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30328. Interment will follow at Arlington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation, Inc, 5582 Peachtree Rd., Atlanta, GA 30341. Mr. Carter was born April 28, 1934 in Folkston, Georgia, son of the late Troy Calvin Carter and the late Elizabeth “Penny” Simmons Carter Lloyd. He was a 1953 graduate of Charlton County High School in Folkston. He was also a graduate of Middle Georgia College, Cochran, Georgia and Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia. Mr. Carter served two years in the United States Army and was posted in Korea. His career began as an accountant with a major steel company in Atlanta, but after receiving his Physics degree from Georgia Tech, he spent over 50 years in the Aerospace Industry. After retiring in 1994, Mr. Carter continued as an aviation consultant. Gil Carter felt a need and desire to serve the less fortunate and did this as a member of the Sandy Springs Lions Club, joining in 1973. Gil Carter had been heavily involved with the organization since that time. He served in many club, district and state positions. He was a District Governor for District 18A which covers Atlanta and Northwest Georgia. He was predeceased in 1986 by his sister, Eloise Carter Evans of Folkston, Georgia and in 2001 by his brother, Daniel Edward Carter of Fernandina Beach, Florida. Survivors include his wife, Justine “Teena” Dinsmore Carter; son, Gilbert “Gil” James Carter of Sandy Springs; sister, Joyce Carter Butts of Jacksonville, Florida; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and friends.
