Joan Goodman Riley, 88, of Berkeley Lake, Ga passed away October 12, 2025 after a brave battle with cancer. Her devotion to faith, family and friends was a constant example to those around her of how to live a full life.
Joan was born October 21, 1936 in Mobile, AL to the late John Oscar and Freddie Goodman. At the age of 8, her family moved to the Garden Hills neighborhood in Atlanta, Ga. It was there and at Christ the King Catholic School where she began to form her lifelong friendships that remained until her passing. Along with these special women, her neighbors from the Branches and Lake Berkeley, Joan created wonderful memories. The monthly “Birthday Group,” full of friends that date back 70-80 years, was absolutely one of her favorite pastimes.
Joan’s most important accomplishment began when, at the age of 35, she lost her husband, Neil, to cancer. As a single mother, she never missed a swim meet, dance recital or sporting event at North Springs High School. Her example of love and support were constantly apparent. Her joy continued as she created unique relationships with each of her grandchildren. We had the pleasure of watching her light up around her 4 great-grandchildren as well.
While we all will miss her wisdom and quick wit, we are certain that she was greeted quickly in heaven by not only Jesus, but our father--praising her for a job well done.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Neil Webb Riley Jr, and is survived by her children, Donna M Riley (Patrick), Julie Riley Lopez, Neil Webb Riley III (Karen), Kathleen Riley Valentine (Raymond); grandchildren, Paul, Neil, Maegen, Bridget, Emily, Madelyn, Mary Grace; great grandchildren, Ritter, Reece, Brodie, Bowen: brother Jack Goodman (Pat).
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to our Lady of Perpetual Help Home.
