Joe was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Catherine Lynch, whom he affectionately called Cathy. Catherine passed away in September 2023, following 66 years of marriage. Together, they built a life centered on family, friendship, laughter, and deep devotion to one another.
He was also preceded by his sister Jean, brother Bill, and grandson Chris.
He is survived by his children: Joe Lynch (Kathy), Mary Martin (Roger), Mike Lynch, Tricia Greenberg (Brian), Helen Thomas (Dee), and Jim Lynch. Joe was a proud “PopPop” and is survived by 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Sue, brother Terry, and other extended family members who were loved and will miss him dearly.
Joe was born on March 1, 1933, in Brooklyn, New York, to Joseph and Helen (Barth) Lynch. Proud of his Irish Catholic heritage, Joe carried his roots with him throughout his life, pairing a strong work ethic with a sharp wit and a generous spirit.
Joe grew up in Freeport, Long Island, New York, where he would meet his beloved wife. They grew up just two streets apart — Connecticut Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue — and later met in their high school years, where their story together began. Joe proudly served in the United States Army for two years, and following his service, he and Cathy married and began their life together in Jamaica, Queens, where they shared their first apartment. They later moved back to Long Island, where they welcomed their first child and continued building their family.
He enjoyed a long and successful career with Johns Manville, where he worked from 1955 until 1980. His career began in New York and then took the family, as it continued to grow, to several states before they settled permanently in Atlanta in the early 1970s. In 1986, Joe started his own company, Omni Painting, and for many years was proudly known for being “Out Decorating Atlanta” until his retirement.
In 2017, Joe and Cathy moved to Mount Vernon Towers. There, Joe formed new friendships and brought laughter and joy to the MVT community. His presence was unforgettable.
Joe lived life fully and joyfully. He loved running races, golfing, swimming, enjoying a good glass of wine, and smoking cigars. He was known for a quick smile and an even quicker comment. For more than 40 years, Joe remained close with a group of friends affectionately known as “the football group,” friendships that stood the test of time. For
even longer, he and Cathy were faithful Catholics and attended Saint Jude the Apostle Catholic Church.
Above all else, Joe cherished family. He loved hosting gatherings and celebrations, especially Thanksgiving, filling his home with food, laughter, and the warmth of togetherness. His home was always open, and his table was always full.
Joe’s legacy is one of love, humor, hard work, and enduring relationships. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him. We know Joe is now at peace with the Lord and likely dancing away with his “Cath” as Frank Sinatra sings New York, New York.
A Celebration Of Life will be held on Tuesday, January 20th, 2026 at 10:00 AM at Saint Jude the Apostle Catholic Church in Sandy Springs GA.
