home in Summerville, SC. Julian was predeceased by his parents, George and Edna
Winnerman of St. Louis, MO; his loving wife of 71 years, Harriet Stein Winnerman; daughter
Pam Pellon Winnerman and his son Craig Stephen Winnerman. He is survived by his son, Jay
Lee Winnerman, and grandsons David Cory Winnerman and Zachary Allan Winnerman as well
as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends,
Julian was born in St. Louis, MO, the first of two children. His brother Allan Lawrence
Winnerman passed away on April 12, 1984. The two boys had their maternal grandmother,
Annie Finkel living in their home and as a pastry chef she doted on the boys making sure that
cookies and pies were readily available. Julian always enjoyed his meal but he ate his dinner to
be rewarded with his dessert! At the age of 14 years old, Julian and a friend decided to “crash”
a party being hosted by Harriet Stein at her home. It was truly love at first sight and the two
dated all through high school and were married while attending Washington University on June
15, 1952 On that date a 71 year and 3 month marriage began; they were inseparable partners
for 77 years. It was later learned that they were both in the same kindergarten class!
Julian entered the Army as a Reserved Commissioned Officer grade of Second Lieutenant on
July 3rd, 1954, served his country during the Korean Conflict, was promoted to First Lieutenant
on July 1, 1955, and was discharged as a Reserve Commission Officer on October 9, 1962.
After leaving the Army, Julian returned to his previous employer, Famous & Barr Department
Store where he embarked on his retail career. In 1966, Julian and Harriet moved their family to
Atlanta, GA as Julian had accepted a position with Atlanta’s premier department stores, Rich’s.
Julian rapidly rose through the ranks at Rich’s and retired as an Executive Vice President on
July 1, 1988.
Julian never looked back once he retired. He enjoyed long walks on the Chattahoochee River
Trail, became an avid reader, took numerous oversea trips with Harriet exploring the world,
became an active member of The Benson Center in Sandy Springs eventually becoming the
President of the Benson Foundation, and enjoying his little slice of heaven at Lake Lanier!
Julian was a firm believer in family and family tradition; he would take the Winnerman Crew on
an annual trip to the beach or a cruise and would take the two grandsons on Elderhostel trips to
expand their horizons. Each trip left a lasting memory for each of us and kept the Winnerman
Family a very close and loving group.
April 19th, 2022, Julian and Harriet packed up their home of 56 years in Atlanta and joined their
son Jay at his home in Summerville, SC. Julian looked at the move as a new adventure and
quickly familiarized himself with the South Carolina Low Country. He immediately joined the
Summerville Planet Fitness and would go three times per week; he became the “inspiration” for
many much younger “senior” members to continue their exercise journey! A Memorial Tribute
Service was held by his Planet Fitness friends on Friday, March 8th, 2024.
A graveside service was held on March 4, 2024 at the family plot in Arlington Memorial Park,
Sandy Springs, GA. The service Celebrating Julian’s Remarkable Life was led by his son Jay,
his two grandsons, Cory and Zack along with very close family friends. Julian’s presence made
a difference to many people’s lives; his light will continue to shine brightly through all of those
that he touched through his 91 years of living!! He so wanted to be back in the arms of his loving
wife and to take care of her in eternity - God granted him his wish!
In honoring Julian's memory, may we carry forward his spirit of love, resilience, and service.
A special Thank you to all of the wonderful people at Amedisys Hospice and Springview Primary
Care (MUSC) who lovingly touched Julian and Harriet’s lives.
