Richard "Buz" Stone Charles

Mr. Charles grew up in Atlanta, attended Atlanta schools and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1966.

Mr. Charles proudly served in the Navy. He spent a short time as a private pilot. He then began a long and successful career as a mortgage insurance representative for MGIC and Triad. He traveled the state of Georgia serving his clients and making many friends, some of whom became cherished lifelong friends.

Mr. Charles was an avid fisherman and lover of the sea. He spent many happy hours aboard his beloved Bertram “Tiburon”. As an accomplished pilot, he loved the open sky. One of his favorite things was the time spent flying in his prized Super Cub where he taught his son to fly. Mr. Charles also enjoyed drawing and painting South Pacific Island landscapes and sculpting blue marlin.

Mr. Charles was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Shelly E. Charles; his half-brother, James S. Charles, Jr. and Judy Charles, the mother of his children.

Mr. Charles is survived by his beloved wife of 10 years, Patty Ann Charles; son, Richard D. Charles (Kristen) of Fontana, CA; daughter, Elizabeth Shelly Charles (Matt Brigham); stepson, Russ Jarrett (Ruth) of Augusta, GA; grandchildren, Denver Charles and Will Jarrett; half-sister, Leslie Willetts; and half-brother, Randall Charles.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Association. The family will receive friends Saturday, February 3, 2024, at 1:00 with a memorial service at 2:00 at H.M. Patterson and Son, Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Rd., NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30328. Interment will follow at Arlington Memorial Park.
