

During WWII he served as a B-17 Bomber pilot. Following his wartime service he studied journalism at Northwestern University, graduating in 1949.
He worked for WHAS-TV in Louisville, Kentucky before coming to Atlanta where he opened the southeastern office of the Edward Petry Company. As a pioneer in the field of television advertising, he was a longtime vice-president of this company. During his tenure he was an organizing member and president of the Atlanta Advertising Association. Having worked for many years with WSB-TV in Atlanta, upon retirement he joined a group of colleagues known as The Cox Broadcasting Alumnae.
An avid golfer all his life, Dick was a founding member of the Cherokee Town and Country Club. He was for many years an active member of the session at Peachtree Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Nikki; his son and daughter in law, Mark and Sally and their children, Kyle and Sarah; his son and daughter-law, Peter and Janet and their children, Emily and Anna; his daughter, Leslie; and his daughter and son in law, Stacey and Kevin and their children, Nora and Luke.
A private family memorial service will be conducted at Peachtree Presbyterian Church. Gifts in memory of Dick Hughes may be directed to Seminary Student Scholarships, Peachtree Presbyterian Church, 3434 Roswell Road, NW, Atlanta, GA 30363.
