

Ruth Wilmet Dick, Mrs. Lloyd L. Dick, 93, of Atlanta passed away at Hospice Atlanta on Sunday, the 18th of August, 2013. Mrs. Dick was born on January 27, 1920 in Brooklyn, NY, the only child of the late Elizabeth Suzanna Jugenheimer Baecker and George Conrad Baecker. She grew up in Floral Park, NY and graduated from Sewanhaka High School. She attended Adelphi University on a scholarship, where she was a Delta Zeta and earned a BA degree in June 1941. She continued her involvement in her alma mater eventually becoming the recording secretary of the Alumni Association in the late 50s. Immediately after graduation she married Lloyd and moved to Garden City, NY, where she was active in The Community Church. Before starting her family she worked in Manhattan for J.C. Penney and R.J. Prentiss & Co. She and her husband were very creative, working with ceramics, stained glass and other artistic endeavors. She moved to Atlanta in 1960, a result of her husband’s transfer with Continental Insurance Co. Upon moving, they immediately joined Oglethorpe Presbyterian Church, where they were active leaders in the Horizon Club. She represented Adelphi at the 100th anniversary celebration of Morehouse College in 1967 and at the inauguration of the seventh president in 1968. In the 70s she worked for the IRS in Chamblee. She was always a vocal advocate for various social and political issues, often writing logical, well-considered letters to the editor of the AJC and frequently being published. In the late 70s she began volunteering at Northside Hospital, ultimately dedicating more than 7,100 hours over the next 20 years. During that time she served as Auxiliary Office Receptionist, a fundraiser, a member of the Northside Hospital Auxiliary Board of Directors, and on the Georgia State Council of Auxiliaries, as well as being a leader of the puppet program teaching school children about drug and child abuse. In 2004 she moved with her husband to Brighton Gardens Vinings assisted living. After his death in 2006, she remained at Brighton Gardens (subsequently Emeritus) continuing to volunteer within their community by arranging flowers for the facility every week. She is predeceased by her husband, Lloyd, of 65 years and her daughter, Susan L. Swint. She is survived by her son, Bruce, daughter-in-law, Sylvia, four granddaughters and four great-grandchildren: Laura Dick Moses (Tom)—Taylor, Amy Dick Hurst (Matt)—Calvin and Charlotte Dalke and Henry Hurst, Allison Joanna Dick and Daphne Suzanna Swint. Funeral services celebrating her life will be held Friday, the 23rd of August at eleven o’clock in the Sunrise Chapel at Arlington Memorial Park, Sandy Springs.
