

Virginia Walsh Burke, 91, of Flowery Branch died June 8, 2010. Mrs. Burke was the first woman to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps from Rhode Island. While in the Marines she attended OCS and then became an Officer. She was a very influential elementary school teacher and taught for over 35 years. Mrs. Burke was also an active volunteer and was a past president of PTA, Homemakers Association in Cumming, and was a Girl Scout leader. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Waldo Emerson “Bill” Burke and is survived by her daughter, Sharon Stempel and her partner Darrell Moore; daughter Constance Burke Crawford; son, William Emerson Burke; son, Donald Patrick Burke and his wife, Lurline Craig-Burke; grandchildren, Michael Crawford, Andrea Tudor, Leah Stempel, James Stempel, Katherine and Ryan Burke, Madison Elizabeth Burke; and great grandchildren, Carmichael Crawford, Jennifer Marie Tudor, Alexis Brooke Tudor. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The American Lung Association. A Funeral Mass will be Monday, June 14, 2010 at 11 o’clock at The Catholic Church of St. Ann with The Rev. Joseph Aquino, M.S. as the Celebrant. Interment will follow at Arlington Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Sunday from 4 to 6 o’clock at H.M. Patterson and Son, Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Rd, NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30328.
