My mother, Gardenia Ravelo, was 93 years old and devoted her entire life to her family. She was our heart and soul. 

Much of my childhood was shaped by her strength, as our father was absent for seven years and she carried everything on her shoulders. She raised us with grace, humor, and an unshakable sense of responsibility.  

She was incredibly strong, leaving Cuba on her own with my brother and me so we could have a better life in a free world. That courage defined her. 

She was a loving mother and grandmother, a humanitarian who opened her home to those in need, and someone who instinctively cared for people and animals alike.

 She loved to cook, tell jokes, and bring people together. Our home in Yonkers became a gathering place for friends and family, where everyone was welcome and well fed.  

Placing her in assisted living was one of the hardest decisions of my life. Though I visited constantly and kept her included in our lives, I still carry a lingering sadness. However, after four and a half years, I was blessed to have her live with me for her final eighteen months. She was home.  

My partner cared for her with genuine love, ensuring her medications, hygiene, comfort, and dignity day and night. Because of that, my mother was always clean, comfortable, and well fed. 

We took her everywhere she could go—beach, restaurants, karaoke, even dancing. She was a trooper and loved being part of it all.  

Even as dementia progressed, she always asked about her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Sharing their photos and successes brought her joy.  

I don’t know what comes next. I only know I wish I had more time. What comforts me is knowing she was deeply loved while she was alive and that she felt it.  Her love and legacy live on in all of us.
