Caroline Eleanor Moorer, born on December 22, 1953, in Buff Bay, Jamaica, to Leaford and Enid Gowie, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love and resilience. Elly was a passionate bird watcher and gardener, finding joy in the beauty of nature. At the age of 14, Eleanor moved from Jamaica to England, where she began a remarkable journey. She joined the British Army, serving from November 1971 to July 1972 as a member of the Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Corps, where she trained as a nurse. After her service, she met the love of her life, Johnny, and they were married on March 1, 1975. She leaves behind her two beloved daughters, Kutura and Alexis, who were the pride and joy of her life. To them, she was not only a loving mother but also a source of strength, guidance, and unconditional love. Her greatest legacy lives on in the values she instilled in her girls, which will continue to be carried forward through her grandson, Ian, and her great-granddaughter, Zoey.
Elly’s spirit of love extended beyond her immediate family. She is survived by her siblings Val, Pat, Meg, and Mervin, all residing in the United Kingdom, along with 11 nieces, 7 nephews, and 9 great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved brother, Lancelot “Junior” Gowie.
Cissy was more than a sister to her siblings; she was their closest friend, confidant, and steadfast support. She inspired them to be their best selves, always ready to listen and offer unwavering encouragement, embodying the role of a second mother. Their conversations were filled with spiritual joy, and they cherished the deep connection they shared as she embraced the distinction between religion and spirituality. In this understanding, they found harmony and unity in the eternal bond they shared.
In her pursuit of education, Elly graduated from Adult and Veterans High School in December 1977. She continued her studies at Chicago City-Wide College, where she earned an Associate in Applied Science in Mid-Management with Honors in July 1982. In August 1999, she achieved a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Development from Phoenix University.
Elly dedicated several years to nursing before transitioning into Early Childhood Development, also known as Head Start, where she continued to make a difference in the lives of many children and families.
Her warmth, kindness, and indomitable spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
A graveside service for Elly will be held Friday, August 22, 2025 at 12:00 PM at Glen Haven Memorial Park, 2300 Temple Dr, Winter Park, FL 32789.
