George A. Long III was born in Big Spring, Texas, on November 28, 1944. He was a beloved son, brother, father, and grandfather who lived a life defined by love, service, and devotion to family. His twin sister, Jeanne Mackey Long Jr. ("Candy"), preceded him in death in 2015.
Raised in Rensselaer, Indiana, George graduated from Rensselaer Central High School in 1962. With a deep love for his country, he proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, stationed at Dong Tam Base Camp in the Mobile Riverine Force in the Mekong Delta. His patriotism and unwavering belief in the freedoms of the United States remained a cornerstone of his life.
Following his service, George earned his degree from Indiana University, where he was a proud member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, graduating in 1970. He began his career with Hallmark Cards before moving to Florida with his family in 1979 to open Long's Hallmark Shop in Winter Haven. There, he built a life centered around creating meaningful moments for his customers, friends, and loved ones.
When the store closed, George carried his passion for retail to Renninger’s Antique Center in Mount Dora, where he created a tradition for countless families who built their Christmas villages and vinyl collections year after year. Since moving to Mount Dora in 2013, he cherished the relationships he formed through the market, sharing his love for the holidays and classic music with all who visited.
George also continued to bring joy as a Real Bearded Santa, sharing the magic of Christmas with children and families, embodying the spirit of giving and wonder.
A passionate sports fan, George was especially devoted to Indiana Hoosiers basketball and football—recently relishing in their historic 2024 season.
But above all, his greatest joy came from watching his granddaughters play softball, cheering them on with boundless pride and enthusiasm.
He is survived by his loving children, George A. Long IV ("Bucky") and wife Tami, Chrissanne and husband Craig Hosking, and Dallas and wife Nancy. He was a cherished grandfather to Kate, Anne, Mary, Maggie, Clayton, Brooks, and Bennett. His legacy of love, laughter, and dedication to family will live on through them.
George will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
