

Joseph had a distinguished military career, joining the United States Air Force in 1960, and served as an air policeman, security policeman, and later as a training specialist. He was a dedicated member of the United States Air Force’s Security Forces, performing law enforcement and force protection duties for strategic air forces during the height of the Cold War. Joseph served in multiple duty locations, including overseas assignments in Puerto Rico, Guam, Turkey, and the Philippines before returning to his home town of Sanford upon retirement in 1980. After his retirement, Joseph worked for the Florida Department of Labor as a Local Veteran’s Employment Representative, actively advocating the hiring of veterans, and helping hundreds of thousands of veterans transition from their military service to civilian life.
Joseph’s hobbies and interests included a love of science fiction and fantasy, westerns, swimming and diving, shooting and archery, travelling and spending time with his family.
Joseph was married to Deborah Govocek on February 14, 1965, and was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Joseph is survived by his wife Deborah, his son, Joseph G. Govocek, III, and daughter-in-law, Karren Govocek, and his grandchildren, Nicola Govocek, Joseph G. Govocek, IV, and Annika Govocek.
A graveside service will be held at 9:00 AM on June 22, 2019 at Oaklawn Cemetery in Sanford.
In lieu of Flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to a Veteran’s charity in his name.
