Joyce Rogers Toggweiler

Joyce was born and grew up in Kansas City, Missouri, where her father was minister of the Kensington Ave Baptist Church. She had two older siblings, Olive and Edgar (Eddie).

She attended Stetson University in DeLand, where she majored in music and was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. During her time at Stetson, she met the love of her life, John Toggweiler. They married in 1949 after her graduation and would spend 69 years together.

Joyce and John moved to Miami, where she taught school before starting her family. She and John eventually settled in Miami Springs, where they raised three children and were active members of the Miami Springs Baptist Church. Joyce sang alto in the choir and even managed to corral John into choir duties as well.

After John’s retirement, Joyce and John moved to Lake Mary and later to Village on the Green in Longwood.

Her home and family were the center of her life. She was a patient and loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and approached life with an abundance of kindness, acceptance, and a deep, abiding faith. An inveterate coupon clipper, she loved searching for bargains wherever and whenever they presented themselves.

Joyce and family loved outdoor activities, including camping trips to North Carolina and Nova Scotia, and water-skiing vacations at Lake June and Bull Shoals. They also loved family reunions in Olive Chapel, NC, where her mother was born and raised. To escape the heat in their later years, Joyce and John spent their summers in Linville Land Harbor, NC, where they welcomed many friends and visitors.

Joyce was predeceased by John in 2019. She is survived by her son John R. (Susan Leigh) and her daughters, Gail Clapner (Keith) and Kathy Signer (John), a nephew (Greg Good) and niece (Patty Good), and by seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

A celebration of her life will be deferred until the end of the pandemic.
