Robert E. Brown (Bob) was born January 26, 1943, in Hartford City, Indiana. He was the son of Eldo & Edna Brown. Bob lived on an 80 acre farm in Indiana. He attended Blackford County schools and at lunch he came home and milked cows. Immediately upon graduation in 1961 he joined the Navy. Subsequently he was stationed at the Naval Air Station in Sanford Florida, in Heavy Attack Squadron 1. His squadron was aboard the aircraft carrier USS Independence for two Mediterranean cruises. After being discharged in 1965 he then continued in the reserves in Jacksonville, FL for two years. The best thing in his Naval career, according to him, is that he was stationed in Sanford and met his wife Peggy and he never left the area.
Bob had a quick wit and was always joking around. Much to Peggy’s dismay he always told people that he picked her up in an alley. She would then feel obligated to explain that it was a bowling alley where they were bowling with friends next to each other.
After his discharge from the Navy, Bob went to work for Florida Power & Light Co. in the Transmission and Distribution section. He was a lineman and ended up being a Line Crew Foreman where he worked for 31 years.
Because of his two sons, Bob got involved in Boy Scouts and spent 17 ½ years as Boy Scout Leader and Cub Scout Leader. He ended up receiving the Silver Beaver Award and many other scouting recognitions. His Troop 529 was involved a lot in Indian Lore. His boys learned Indian dancing and made teepees and their own outfits, etc. They performed for many scouting events and also nursing homes and other events. During his tenure 21 Eagle Scouts came from his troop. Besides Scouting, he would “change hats” and he also served as a Little League baseball coach.
After his Boy Scout years, Bob & Peggy continued camping but in an RV. They were able to travel the USA and parts of Canada and Mexico, having camped in 45 of the 50 states. They were members of Florida Good Sams Camping Club and a member of the Florida Eagles Chapter. He served in various positions of leadership there, the last being Liaison for Florida Good Sams and Camp Boggy Creek for seriously ill children.
He was a member of Westview Baptist Church, he served in various positions there, including being a cart driver, as well as a member of the safety team, and faithfully worked in the concessions for Upward Basketball frying those famous french fries.
Bob is survived by his wife Peggy Price Brown; sons Jeffrey R. Brown (Cathy) and Kevin A. Brown; grandchildren Amy E. Brown Rockstraw (Jonathan) and J.R. Brown (Stephanie); great grandchildren Logan J. Brown, Avery L. Brown; Makenna Joy Brown, Baby Girl Brown; siblings Carolyn Steinfeldt (Bill), Paul Brown (Linda), Lawrence Brown (Connie), and several nieces and nephews.
The family will host visitation from 10:00 am - 11:00 am on Friday, May 16, 2025 at Westview Baptist Church, 4100 H E Thomas Jr Pkwy, Sanford, FL 32771 with the funeral service following at 11:00 am.
Mr. Brown will be laid to rest with military honors following the service in Oaklawn Park Cemetery, 4991 Co Rd 46A, Lake Mary, FL 32746.
