Judy B Carmichael was born on September 16, 1930 and was the first baby born in the new Shelby County Memorial Hospital in Sydney, Ohio. She was the daughter of Norman and Amy Bowsher. The family moved to Monrovia, California when Judy was 11 years old. She graduated from Monrovia-Arcadia-Duarte High School where she was prominent in student activities. Judy attended UCLA where she became a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority. She met John Carmichael on a blind date, who became the love of her life. John was in his final year in Petroleum Engineering at USC. (Now how did that happen?) They were married on February 18, 1950 and settled in Compton, California. She decided that English Literature which was her major at UCLA, wasn’t going to contribute much to the new couple’s income, so she attended Compton Junior college to study accounting. The Carmichaels lived in Compton for five years, until Judy asked John about working overseas. John found no problem with getting a foreign job. They moved to San Tome, Venezuela in 1955, where John worked for Mene Grande Oil Co (Gulf Oil) and began a new chapter in their lives. They spent fifteen wonderful years working, traveling, bridge playing, hunting and fishing. They made many wonderful friends which were more like family to them. Judy kept books for several small businesses down there, just to keep her hand in accounting. Judy and John returned to the U.S. in 1970 and Judy found work in accounting with several companies in the furniture business and finally retired from a division of HON Industries in 1987 as Controller. Meanwhile, John had joined the Long Beach Petroleum Club and Judy became very active in the Petroleum Club Women and remained active until her death.
