Few seemed more full of life than Nellie, making the loss all the more deeply felt by us all.
Nellie lived to love and enjoy the finest things life had to offer. Traveling, shopping, fine dining, and various forms of entertainment. She enjoyed her home, family, and her friends by hosting dinner parties all the time. She had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. She had a generous spirit, and a heart like a lion.
Nellie accepted Christ at an early age in Laurel MS, and received the baptism of the Holy Spirit, dedicating her life to God. She graduated from Strong Vincent High School, and was employed by General Telephone Co. and at night she was also a featured singer at Damores Restaurant in Erie, PA, She attended Holy Trinity COGIC under the leadership of the late Bishop J.D. Myers. She lived many years in Erie with her family before moving to California. In Los Angeles she attended Crenshaw Christian Center, Frederick K. Price, Pastor. and remained a member in good standing for the rest of her life.
Nellie’s major lifelong achievement was her ability to sing anything, anytime, and anyplace. As she would often say with a laugh “that’s what I do!” She studied voice culture with Alma Bennett, Ernest Van Calvin in Erie, PA, Henry Rosenblatt of New York, NY, and with the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, MA. She delighted in being a featured soloist with First Church of the Covenant, and two years with the Erie Philharmonic Choir.
Concert & stage performances have taken her throughout New England, Canada, Hawaii, and Japan. Her repertoire includes songs from such work as Passion According to St. Matthew, Elijah, Brahms’ Requiem, the Seven Last Words, The Messiah, Madame Butterfly, La Traviata, and numerous hymns, and spirituals. She was always available in the Lords service through her ministry of song.
Nellie’s proud accomplishment was the establishment of her own Songs Of Solomon Ministry, appearing as guest soloist for the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship Intl, in Orange County, The Women’s Aglow, Trinity Broadcasting, and many other associates from coast to coast.
Her CD recordings include The Lighthouse (a favorite of many), Thy Way, Worship Time with Nellie Amos, and Light of A Million Mornings.
Doing it all for the Glory and honor of God.
Nellie has said in recent years, “I have felt the call and the anointing of the minstrel; as spoken of in II Kings 3:15. “I say with assurance the Lord is my strength and song. He has become my salvation.”
