Patricia Ann Stanley was born on January 13th, 1936, in Los Angeles, California, to Ellis and Fern Stanley. Her family moved to Santa Ana when she was 5 and then Cowan Heights/North Tustin when she was 14 with her two younger sisters, Sue Ellen and Martha. Patty grew up in a close, loving family and would always share memories of happy family times together. Her favorite childhood activities included riding horses and playing piano. Patty graduated from Lathrup Junior High in 1950 and then Tustin High School in 1953. Patty went on to attend UC Berkeley where she was part of Alpha XI Delta sorority and a lifelong sisterhood of wonderful friends. She graduated UC Berkeley in 1957 with her teaching credential.
Patty taught elementary school in Berkeley for 2 years and then moved back to Southern California and taught at Newport Beach Elementary. She loved teaching and all of her students and their families.
In December 1961, she met Dick Schmid, and a courtship soon followed. He swept her off her feet and by April, they were engaged! On July 29th, 1962, they were married at Tustin Presbyterian Church with a reception at Tustin Hills Racquet Club. They settled into a home in Tustin and expanded their family soon after with the births of Lisa and Karen. In addition to being a full-time wife and mother, Patty volunteered for a variety of local charities including Salvation Army, Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure and Girl Scouts with her daughters’ troops. Family was extremely important to Patty throughout her life, and she kept a close relationship with both her sisters, as well as all her nieces and nephews.
Patty was often referred to as the social director of many friend circles as well as with her family. She organized countless social gatherings and was known as the life of the party, always the last to leave, so as not to miss anything!
Patty was blessed to have found her soulmate in Dick, celebrating over 58 years of married love and admiration together. Dick and Patty enjoyed many trips together over those years including Kihei-Maui, Pacific Northwest, New Orleans, New England, Canada, Caribbean, Mexico, Costa Rica, Europe, Africa and New Zealand with both family and friends.
Patty was a dedicated daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and friend to so many. Her love of people was apparent in all that she did and despite various health struggles in her later years, she constantly reminded others of how blessed she was. She was certainly a blessing to all who knew her.
Patty passed away on January 5th, 2021, at Hoag Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach, and is survived by her husband Richard, sisters Sue Ellen Richmond and Martha Fitzpatrick, daughters Lisa Beltramo and Karen Hankinson, son-in-law Larry Beltramo, 4 grandchildren Nicole Beltramo Frischknecht, Steven Beltramo, Trent Hankinson and Ian Hankinson and many nieces and nephews. We would like to thank her caregivers, Patricia Orozco and Maria Sanchez, for their love and devotion.
Private family graveside services will be held later this month with a memorial and celebration of life service to follow in the coming months, when more can gather and celebrate her.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Salvation Army or the charity of your choice.
