Richard Stanley Swift, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on March 30, 2025, at the age of 85 in Buena Park, California, following a series of prolonged health challenges.
Born on September 9, 1939, in Spokane, Washington, Richard—known to many as “Dick”—grew up in Santa Ana, California. He proudly served in the U.S. Army, the California Forestry Service, and later as a member of the Buena Park Police Reserve. He built a long and respected career with Pacific Bell and was an elected officer in the Communications Workers of America, Local 9510. He also remained deeply involved in the local Democratic Party throughout his life.
Richard had a generous heart and a strong sense of community. Through the United Way and other organizations, he dedicated countless hours volunteering—feeding the homeless, visiting hospitals dressed as a clown to lift spirits, and supporting causes close to his heart. His service touched the lives of many and reflected his lifelong commitment to helping others.
Outside of his community service and career, Richard lived life with curiosity and enthusiasm. He loved deep sea fishing and had a passion for technology, spending time exploring computers, attending computer shows, and staying up to date with the latest innovations.
Richard and his beloved wife, Pat, shared a love for travel. Together they explored the U.S. by motorhome, made frequent trips to Hawaii, and in retirement, traveled the world by cruise ship. He also had a lifelong fascination with railroads—both model and full-sized—and could often be found enjoying train shows and museums.
Above all, Richard will be remembered for his warmth, humor, dedication, and unwavering love for his family. He was a steadfast and caring husband, a proud and supportive father, and a cherished grandfather and great-grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Margaret Swift, and his daughter, Sharon Swift. He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia; his sister, Janice Bjorklund; his children, Tim Patton, Michael Patton, Coleen Hernandez, Tamara Powers, Beckie Howell, Larry Swift, and Fred Swift; eleven grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
