Tomasa Ortiz

Tomasa was born in Pericotepec, in the municipality of San Miguel Totolapan in the state of Guerrero, Mexico. The first child of Nieves Jimenez and Santiago Salgado, whom she lost at a young age, she spent much of her early childhood with her younger brother, Vitalid Salgado. Accustomed from a young age of helping her mother and grandmother with household duties, helping her aunt in a local bakery, and working on the family farm, she moved from Pericotepec to Mexico City to work as a live-in domestic for several families. Here, she was able to attend night school and finish her elementary school education. During her time working in Mexico City, several of her cousins found similar employment in neighboring households and they spent their days off in the city, shopping, and coming back to Tomasa’s room to spend time together, share stories, memories of Pericotepec, and embroider cloth napkins and tablecloths.

After years of working in Mexico City, Tomasa decided to try to immigrate to the United States for better opportunities. In 1980 she arrived in Santa Ana, California and in the following decades she worked as a custodian, nanny, factory employee, and housekeeping hotel staff. She met her future husband and father of her children, Arturo Ortiz in Santa Ana, California soon after she arrived in the United States. They had four children, Yesenia, Villamar, Rene, and Javier whom they raised in Costa Mesa, California.

In 2000, they bought a home in Santa Ana, California and Tomasa was happy to set about planting all of her favorite plants, flowers, and fruit trees.

In recent years she enjoyed spending time with her four granddaughters, Madeline, Vanessa, Giselle, and Capri, gardening, walking her dog Teddy Bear, and watching her favorite television shows.

A celebration of life for Tomasa will be held Sunday, April 2, 2023 at 3:00 PM at 9641 Crosby Ave., Garden Grove, CA 92844.

Tomasa nació en Pericotepec, municipio de San Miguel Totolapan, en el estado de Guerrero, Mexico. Primera hija de Nieves Jiménez y Santiago Salgado, quien falleció cuando Tomasa era muy joven, pasó mucha de su niñez con su hermano,

Vitalid Salgado. Acostumbrada desde una joven edad de ayudarle a su mamá y abuela con los trabajos del hogar, con su tía en una panadería, y trabajando en la huerta, decidió irse de Pericoptepec para la Ciudad de México y trabajar como empleada doméstica en varios hogares. En la Ciudad de Mexico pudo terminar su educación básica en un curso de noche. Mientras trabajando en la Ciudad de Mexico, varias primas encontraron similar empleo en la ciudad y durante sus días libres, paseaban por la ciudad, de compras y regresaban a el cuarto de Tomasa para estar juntas, compartiendo historias, memorias de Pericotepec, y bordando servilletas y manteles.

Después de años de trabajar en la Ciudad de Mexico, Tomasa decidió intentar emigrar a los Estados Unidos para mejores oportunidades. En 1980 llego a Santa Ana, California y en las décadas que siguieron trabajó en limpieza, cuidando a niños, empleada de fabrica, y de limpieza en hotel. Conoció a su futuro esposo y padre de sus hijos en Santa Ana, California, pronto después de llegar a los Estados Unidos. Tuvieron cuatro hijos, Yesenia, Villamar, Rene, y Javier, quienes criaron en Costa Mesa, California.

En el 2000 compraron casa en Santa Ana. California, y a Tomasa le encanto sembrar todas sus favoritas plantas, flores, y árboles frutales.

En recientes años, le gusto pasar el tiempo con sus cuatro nietas,Madeline, Vanessa, Giselle, y Capri, cuidando su jardin, paseando a su perrito Teddy Bear, y mirando sus favoritos programas de televisión.

Se llevará a cabo una celebración de la vida de Tomasa el domingo 2 de abril de 2023 a las 3:00 p. m. en 9641 Crosby Ave., Garden Grove, CA 92844.
