Dorothy was born Dorothy Ann Boehme on April 12, 1940. She is survived by her elder brother William Boehme, younger sister Judith Wagner and joins her younger brother James Boehme in peace. The family lost their beloved father Hans Willie Boehme early to cancer and was raised in tough conditions in Richmond, CA by their mother Helen (Braun).
Dorothy met her sweetheart Richard at 15 ½ years old and the two were married in 1959 and remained devoted to each other for another 57 years. They had two sons, John and Rick during Richard’s service in the Coast Guard and Dorothy’s stint at Foster’s Freeze. During Dorothy’s tenure as a bank teller and Richard’s post service tenure at Mutual Grocers, the couple decided to join Richard’s father in business in the South Bay in the developing techniques of concrete drilling and sawing. Dorothy performed an integral role along with her husband and in laws to start and develop Lombardo Diamond Core Drilling Co, Inc. She performed many jobs in the company throughout the years and served as the company’s secretary/treasurer and board member through the end of her life. She worked with family members as well as Lombardo “family” members, many of who thought of her as a second mom.
Dorothy developed renal failure at the age of 32. She endured dialysis at the age of 40 and had a cadaver kidney transplant at the age of 46. Most did not even realize her long road and battle to health because she was a strong and positive woman. She often could be more concerned with a friend’s sniffly nose or driving safe than she was with her failing kidneys. After rejection, Dorothy once again endured years of dialysis. Dorothy accepted a kidney gift from her son John in 1995. She was able to enjoy another 21 years of good life with the latter 3 being subtle due to poor health. She enjoyed her golden years doting on her husband, kids, grandkids and great grandkids. She enjoyed traveling and crafting as well as always making her opinions known on social media.
In addition to her siblings and husband Richard D Long, Dorothy is survived by her sons John Long and Richard S Long, her daughter in law Lisa Long, granddaughters Meghan, Jessica and Emily and grandson Richard Jr. and great grandchildren Tyler, Brayden, Brody and soon to be baby Wade.
Dorothy lived her life thinking of her family, dispensing wisdom, wit and life lessons from the school of hard knocks. She will be sorely missed and will be forever in our hearts and minds.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations in memory of Dorothy Long be made to support kidney transplant research at UCSF.
