Gloria Samayoa, Presente!
Our dear friend Gloria Samayoa has joined the powerful circle of ancestors watching over us. She passed away from cancer on August 24, with her beloved partner Arturo and family at her side.
Some of us called her  La Divina Gloria, as my friend from Argentina,   Ruben, nicknamed her soon after meeting her,  because she WAS divine, a classy, classic Chicana beauty, inside and out.  A resident of the Mission for many years, she was known to visit and volunteer at Galeria de la Raza, where she met and became friends with then Director  of Studio 24,  Maria Pinedo and her daughter Vita. 
I got to know her when she came to work in 2007 at Concilio of San Mateo County in Burlingame, where the offices of Chicana Latina Foundation were also located. It was love/fun/heart/dichos humor/ celebration planning/after work shenanigans/hermana and family love at first sight! 
No matter what challenges we were dealing with, we could be assured that we would make each other laugh with some commentary and some dicho that would set us roaring with laughter. "Ya te vas otra vez como burro sin mecate' when I was off to some conference." " Los lunes ni las gallinas ponen" when we were dealing with the Monday blues and her favorite "Pues en las buenas y en las malas, aqui estamos manita" when she went with me to get my head shaved once the chemo had started its ravaging effects. And  then we walked to a fancy hat shop and she helped me pick my first cancer hat.
She was a devoted supporter of Chicana Latina Foundation and fiercely committed to the low income , immigrant and POC communities served by CLF and Concilio of San Mateo County.   
Even as she struggled with the ups and downs of cancer herself, to the end, she had her spirit intact, her weakened smile still brighter than most and her good humor flowed. She got a good laugh looking at my broken wrist when I visited her, as she mimicked me dancing while in her wheel chair.

I had the pleasure of working with Gloria since 2009 while she worked with ELCON and it was an honor to have met her. She had an unforgettable personality and she always made me feel welcomed when ever I had the opportunity to visit. She had a smile that was contagious and a laugh that was sincere. She wasn’t only a coworker but someone I could consider a good friend. She will be missed dearly but will never be forgotten. 

My condolences to family and friends who  loved shared life with Gloria, my Tocaya.   I appreciated her friendly, gracious, dignified, authentic and generous way of being.  Her expressions carried us through our own history - as Chicanas, with Mexican/American heritage - the soul of the past and the present and of an independent woman. She was a real and natural beauty.  Throughout the years, she created her own beautiful environment within her home/apartments/office where she shared her talents as well as good cooking with others.  In her home she created an environment that was welcoming, fun and aesthetic - no matter the size.  When she invited us for a meal that she prepared for us, it didn't just smell tantalizing, we knew it was fresh/organic/made from scratch, aesthetically presented and always delicious!! 
We so enjoyed the ambiance and looked forward to being together because it was an experience!  The music she played took us different places and the conversations took us even further and deeper!  I am so grateful for the time and space we shared as friends! 
I remember being excited that she agreed to help me decorate a space for a party I was having for my son and I because I could enjoy and rely on her own generous and loving touch!  This was her talent, her heart and her gift!   She offered her best with the best of intentions to her friends and colleagues consistently.  And then, she hooked up with Arturo.  I was truly pleased that she'd found a companion to share life with and am grateful for the time and love they shared!!   As hard as it is now, it has created good memories that we will carry in our hearts to  treasure.
She is so dearly missed in our circle but the memory of her smile makes me smile. 

My deepest sympathies to Gloria's family.  I pray that god will comfort you during this time of need.  I met Gloria about 15 years ago and we always had good conversations and lot of laughs.  Her smile was big and her laugh was contagious.  I am truly honored and blessed to have had a chance to know her.
