It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our father Joao Lourenco DaSilva (John DaSilva), a beloved husband, brother, father, and grandfather. He peacefully passed away at the age of 79 at Santa Clara Kaiser Hospital, surrounded by his loving family as he took his final breath of life.
Born on August 10, 1945, in Santana, Madeira Island, Portugal, Joao lived there until the age of 28. At that time, he made the courageous decision to move to the United States with his wife, seeking a better future for their family. Arriving with little knowledge of English and few financial resources, and two infant daughters. Joao’s journey was one of immense resilience, hard work, and unwavering dedication. His first job was at a sausage company, where he worked tirelessly to provide for his loved ones. Through determination and sacrifice, Joao saved enough money to buy a bicycle, which he used to commute to work in all weather, a true testament to his work ethic.
Joao eventually transitioned to a job at a steel factory on Reed Street, where he continued his years of dedication. In 1976, he reached a significant milestone by purchasing his first home and car. As his family grew, Joao’s commitment to creating a better life for them never wavered. Over time, he was able to save enough to buy a larger home, where he would raise his five children and later, proudly watch his ten grandchildren flourish.
In 1983, Joao began working at Kaiser Santa Clara, where he dedicated 35 years of service before retiring. His devotion to both his family and his work demonstrated the depth of his character and love for those around him.
Joao is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Irene DaSilva, his daughters Gilda DaSilva, Catarina Quintero, Irene Torres, Louisa Olguin, and his son, John DaSilva. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Manuel Pagoada, Luis Pagoada, Anthony Torres, Abigail Torres, Alexander Torres, Serena Olguin, Cynthia Olguin, Alicia Olguin, Natalie DaSilva, and Jacob DaSilva, sister Ana de Frietas, nieces, great-nieces, and great nephew.
Joao’s legacy will live on through his family, who will carry forward the values he instilled in them. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will forever remain in the hearts of all who loved him.
Rest in peace, Pai.
