My sincerest condolences to John Humbert's family and friends,

When John was the Deputy Division Chief for IT Operations, From about  ~1999-2010. I worked in the office across the hall from his.  These are only a few of many memories I was fortunate to have shared with him.

They say Leaders stand on the shoulders of giants.  I say John was born a giant.  (Don't let his physical stature fool you). 

I observed when several stellar leaders at NASA Ames stood on his shoulders.  His contributions were also stellar, just quieter and more lasting.  

His dry sense of humor saw us through challenging times. We (Scott Santiago, Terry Kurtz, George Alger and I)  would gather in his office after hours to recap the day's insanity, He had a way of telling us hilarious NASA war stories with a straight face.  Pretty soon we were full-on laughing and remembering not to take things too seriously.

No matter how  surrealistic the annual proposed budget cuts were,  John would walk across the street to the Directors Office and somehow solutions materialized. (I should have gone with him!)

Most people have no idea how John's ingenuity protected the annual Central Computing Facility (CCF)  budget and capabilities. I believe he's up there smiling away having fun beyond supporting the Artificial intelligence; now he's working with Pure Intelligence.  

John you gave everything an employer could ever ask for, and yet  there was actually one more thing...you gave us your heart. 

We'll miss you trusted friend and guide.  -God bless.

I’ve always admired my cousin John (Johnny) Humbert. He was an amazing man, super intelligent, a devoted son, brother, husband and father.  We had many great times as children.  His mom who I knew as Bana was my mother’s sister and we often drove to Spokane from Yakima for long and exciting visits. I will miss him greatly by family, friends and his colleagues at NASA.  Rest peacefully dear Johnny.  I love you always.  Michelle Van Slyke

I’m so sorry for your loss. I am the second generation of Buchanan to work with John (my mother Rosemary also worked with John and is in one of the pictures with John in front of a CDC computer).   He was such an asset to NASA Ames, involved with so many aspects of Ames’ infrastructure enhancements over the years.  John and I had many discussions over the years strategizing on projects and how to cut through all of the bureaucratic red tape to keep large projects on schedule and within budget. John was a master at this, resulting in many challenging successes. John was also such a great human being. I always looked forward to meetings with John, as he and I would find the humor in the ridiculousness of government politics, policies, and personalities. My Mom also always had the highest respect for John, and enjoyed working with him in the early days of supercomputing at NASA. I will always remember John as the quiet eye of the hurricane that was NASA Ames.
