Joe was born in Barangay Malibong, Urbiztondo, Pangasinan, Philippines on August 11, 1941 to Remigio and Maria Sison, the second of ten total children. He moved to San Francisco, CA with his first wife, Gloria, in 1972. Two years later, their daughter, Jennette, joined them from the Philippines and they moved to Mountain View, CA. Joe and Gloria’s second daughter, Jessica, was born in 1978 when the family moved to Santa Clara, CA.
In the Philippines, Joe earned his Bachelor of Arts from Manuel L. Quezon University in 1971. A very hard worker, he was employed at several companies throughout the years in CA such as the Boy Scouts of America National Supply Division as an Order Filler and Supply Machine Operator, Dysan Corporation as a Chemical Technician, and Barnes-Hinds Hydrocurve, Inc as Compounder. He later worked at TCI Communications, Inc/AT&T Broadband/Comcast where he was employed as a Converter Lab Technician until his retirement in 2003.
After his first wife passed away in 1999, Joe married Jean in 2001. Upon retiring, both enjoyed traveling to over 20 countries going on many cruises and trips with family and friends from church including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Poland, France, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece, Czech Republic, Turkey, Mexico, Columbia and through the Panama Canal. Sailing around the British Isles with his wife and daughters in 2017 was his last international cruise. Amongst many trips stateside, he visited the Space Needle in Seattle, road tripped to Mt. Rushmore/Crazy Horse Memorial, island-hopped the Hawaiian Islands, swam off the coast of Florida, marveled at the nature of Alaska, and ate lobster in Maine.
Outside of travel, Joe was very active with walking, biking, gardening, and fishing. He also enjoyed cheering for the San Francisco 49ers and Golden State Warriors. Both Joe and Jean could always be found working in the yard taking care of their many plants and trees. They loved sharing avocados, persimmons, lemons, tomatoes, and kale with friends and family. Joe was also an active participant at St. Lawrence the Martyr Catholic Church in Santa Clara, CA as an usher and one of the founding members of the Filipino Association.
Joe loved his family and cherished his time with them, especially those under 5 years old. Besides helping several family members immigrate to the United States, he generously assisted multiple nieces and nephews in the Philippines with their education, and countless others with various financial needs. Additionally, he continued to be active in the community of his hometown of Urbiztondo, Pangasinan donating funds for a comfort room (CR) in 2009 and the gates and water system in 2018 at Malibong Elementary School.
Joe is survived by Jean, his loving wife of 21 years, children Jennette and Jessica, sisters Elisa, Alegria, Remedios, Lina, Benieda, Evelina and brother Manuel in addition to many nieces, nephews, and “apo”. He also had several pets over the years, but was closest to his cat, Jersey.
