Remembering special Family times at Pajaro Dunes during Thanksgiving! 

One of Mr. Sapena's often repeated stories  recalled his early aviator days when he ferried WW 11 aircraft across the Country, but with no mention of any States. His stories impressed upon you, those aircraft of crud transport with no means of navigation other than landmarks on the ground, which were dependent upon what other pilots conveyed about a flight route. His stories included what he had read about the War in the Pacific, weaving his story around the combat of many.  He would always end his weathered stories with exclamation point where Dora Sapena navigated him through learning how to run a business. Their daughters: Nancy became his co-pilot in the office and home; Judy managed a portion of the JoDor business; Her daughter worked a good share, therein. Often the flight stories had the feature of being lost, and he attribute Dora and Nancy for keeping him on track, certainly during these dinner time family gatherings and in Faith. Each person became the blue sky after flying through the severe southern thunder clouds pushing the aircraft in every direction like a cork in Mississippi river-water, then from New Orleans to Pensacola. My sincere condolences to his friends and relatives who will miss him and his stories with such exclamation.

The Last Morning

A thick, wet air,
settles in the hush,
      of a Willow Glen morning,
      telling the sunlight
already not yet,
holding the colors
                    back...
from the french door windows.
The blur of the orange and plum trees,
a charcoal gray
         turning into indigo shades of sorrows,
         blinking within white shadows,
                                         a boxing wind,
         jewels tangling in the heavy fog.
The pearls of memory falling away,
forming themselves around the emptiness of hope,
                     becoming the lightless spaces of life.  
      Hush, Hush, the morning dew never
                                    cleared from the windows,
                                                               Inside.

My condolences.  Mr. Sapena was one of my English teachers at Wilson Jr. High.  I have fond memories of him and his classes. He demanded more than the other teachers.  But, I learned much more from him because of it.  He had us speak in front of the class every couple of weeks.  It helped me get over being nervous  speaking in front of groups. I have benefitted from that ever since.   He has always been one of my favorite teachers.

To all of Joe's family you have my condolences.  I was lucky enough to visit with Joe last year with my Uncle George Farfan.  My father and Joe where best of friends during his Santa Clara years. They went to flight school together.  My father Manuel Farfan always spoke highly of Joe.  It was a special treat to have Joe tell me stories about him and my father studying to be pilots late at night in the bathroom so they would not be caught having the light on.  They had only graduated from high school at the time and were competing against older students for their wings. I will miss my old teacher and family friend and connection.

Thank you for being like a real dad to me when you married my Mom, Dora. I will always remember the precious times we had in the 42 years of my life.
