

Manuel (Mariano) Fernando Escobar, born on July 30, 1936, in Cedros, Faial, Azores, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2025, in Santa Clara, California, at the age of 88. His life was marked by resilience, dedication, and a deep commitment to his family and the Portuguese community.
In September 1957, the eruption of the Vulcão dos Capelinhos prompted Manuel to seek new opportunities in the United States. Sponsored by his uncle and aunt, he arrived in San Luis Obispo, California, in August 1959 and began working as a dairyman. His beloved wife, Maria, had arrived in February 1960 accompanied by her brother, Joe Rosa, to live with their relatives in Tracy, California. Manuel and Maria were married on May 28, 1960, beginning a partnership that would last over sixty-four years.
In 1965, the couple moved to Santa Clara, where Manuel established a long-standing residence. He held various positions throughout his career, including roles at Moore Business Forms, Westinghouse, and the Santa Clara School District. Manuel was a devoted father to his two sons, Jerry (Ann) and Steve (Wendy), and a proud grandfather to Sydney, Jared, Taylor, and Evan.
He was predeceased by his parents, Franciso Mariano de Escobar, Ana Emilia Goulart, his sister, Maria Helena de Escobar, and numerous godchildren, nieces, and nephews, and godchildren in California and Faial.
For over six decades, Manuel was an active and cherished member of the Santa Clara Portuguese community. He was a founding member, and active leader, of the Santa Clara Portuguese Band which celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2024. He served as Past President of the SES Hall Santa Clara where he helped auction and deliver sopas for the Holy Ghost Festas. He also volunteered at Senhora de Fátima and St. Anthony, and was an active member of the Portuguese Fraternal Society of America (PFSA) Council 16, Mt. View.
Manuel had a passion for sports, ardently supporting Sporting Portugal and the San Francisco 49ers. His enthusiasm for sports was only surpassed by his love for his family and the Portuguese community.
Manuel's legacy of kindness, dedication, and community service will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. His life serves as an enduring example of the profound impact one individual can have on their family and community.
