

Gwen Elder Whetzel, age 93, of Sarasota, Florida passed away Thursday January 13, 2022. Gwen was born September 27, 1928, in Lexington, Illinois. She is survived by her loving husband William “Bill” Whetzel of 67 years. She is one of 7 siblings born to Annie Breese Elder and Oliver Howell Elder of Lexington, Illinois. They have been residents of Sarasota since 1967 when they moved from Bloomington Normal, Illinois. She was a graduate of Illinois State University as a teacher and taught school for many years.
She has been an active member of Pine Shores Presbyterian Church where she held numerous leadership positions. She taught Sunday school, established the Kirk house youth groups for both Junior and Senior High School, as well as planned group activities for summer and weekends for the youth.
Gwen was a member of the Golden City Women’s Club and involved with the Historical Society of Sarasota County. As a 55-yearresident of Sarasota she participated in many community activities. Gwen maintained a strong commitment to her faith and family.
She is survived by her husband William “Bill” Whetzel and her two daughters, Sue A. Whetzel of Sarasota, FL and Janet W. Slabaugh of Sarasota, Florida. Her two grandsons Steven M. Slabaugh and Kyle D. Slabaugh of Georgia and son-in-law David W. Slabaugh of Sarasota.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 17, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Road 72, Sarasota, Florida 34241.
