Jim was predeceased by the love of his life of 67 years, Barbara B. Thomas. He will be affectionately remembered by his children Ann (Joe) Knight, James (Elizabeth) Thomas, Jr., Michael (Shari) Thomas and Patricia (Leigh) Vanneman. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and his brother RC Thomas.
Jim proudly served 21 years in the military and was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars. He received many accommodations to include the Legion of Merit medal. He served honorably in the US Army, achieving the rank of Sargent First Class. He was also an active member of the Tampa Egypt Shrine and once served as an Outer Guard and a member of the Active Patrol. He was a longtime member of the Parrish United Methodist Church.
Jim was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a thoughtful and kind man that lived his life to the fullest always with a smile on his face. He cherished spending time with his family and friends sharing a “pop”. Jim will be deeply missed by his family; however they do find some peace in knowing that he is now with his adoring wife, Barbara.
A service will be held at the Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Rd 72, Sarasota, FL 34241 on February 15, 2023 at 1:30 pm. The family wishes to thank the staff of Tidewell Hospice in Lakewood Ranch for their care and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Jim’s honor to Tampa Egypt Shrine.
