Margaret Mary Fagan Lukas (Margie) lived life to the fullest – up until her final days at 102 years old. For more than 20 years, she enjoyed living full time in Osprey, Florida (south of Sarasota). She welcomed family members and friends to her beautiful home and loved to share the amenities of the area: the beautiful waters, fun dining establishments, a famous piano bar, and, of course, Bingo!
Margie was a fantastic bridge player—playing almost daily with different groups of friends in Osprey in addition to playing online with bridge players from around the world (her online bridge handle was Misty Marge). She also loved watching sports, from golf to football—she knew how to pick the teams as she consistently won the football pools she entered.
She loved to talk about her childhood in Omaha where she grew up in the Cathedral parish area, the 5th of five children. Marge liked to tell us about how the streetcar went by her childhood home. She graduated from Cathedral High School, where she was a cheerleader and was voted Senior Prom Queen. From there, she worked at Mutual of Omaha, leading the “birthday card department” because she had good “Palmer Method Cursive handwriting” she liked to explain.
Margie married the love of her life, Joe Lukas, who was a dentist in Omaha for decades. They had 5 children, 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Marge and Joe loved to move to new homes in Omaha, owning many different ones over the years until they moved to Florida full time.
Margie had a strong Catholic faith and saying the Rosary was her go-to in times of need. Her favorite song? “Margie” by Eddie Cantor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BfolGcKTx4.
Marge Lukas was a very special lady, who lit up every room she was in. Her quick wit and sense of humor were second to none—she leaves a wide circle of family and friends in Osprey and Omaha who love her deeply, and she showed us how to live life to the fullest, even beyond 100 years. Rest in Peace, Margie—we’ll be singing your “Margie” song forever.
Margie was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Joseph A. Lukas.
She is survived by children: James (Margaret), Jane (Steve) Miley, Craig (Cecily), Joan and Patsy; 10 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
